In Ames, Iowa, the Ames Town & Gown Chamber Music Association presents five chamber music concerts featuring artists of international renown, as well as its annual Musicale--a gala fundraising event featuring esteemed local musicians. It also brings chamber musicians to the larger community through various outreach events for school children, university students, senior citizens, and many others. Our association is affiliated with Chamber Music America

APL Reel Connections: “A Surprise in Texas”

This fascinating documentary about the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009 features a “backstage” and personal view as all of the contestants, including Yeol Eum Son vie for the prizes in this most prestigious of piano competitions. The film will be shown as part of the Reel Connections series at the Ames Public Library.

Participants at this Reel Connections event will have a chance discuss the competition with Ames residents who were there. They’ll also have the opportunity to win tickets to the upcoming Ames Town & Gown concert featuring Yeol Eum Son on April 2.

Reel Connections is open to the public, free of charge. This event is co-sponsored by Ames Public Library and Ames Town & Gown

At her April 2 performance, at Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, Ms. Son will perform Sellinger’s Round by Byrd, Liszt’s Three Concert Etudes, Kapustin’s Variations, Op. 41; Schumann’s Humoreske, Op. 20; Liszt’s Rhapsodie Espagnole

At 23 years of age, Yeol Eum Son is already heralded as one ofthe most important musicians of her generation in her native South Korea. She was a featured soloist with the N.Y. Philharmonic as part of the orchestra's historic visit to Seoul. Included in her prize package from the Cliburn Competition are three years of concert tours in the United States and a recording produced
by harmonia mundi usa.

Since joining the KLRITA consortium of 20 chamber music presenters, AmesTown & Gown has hosted the first three winners – all memorable – and we forward to next spring when we will greet
the fourth. Originally formed in 2005 at the Folkswang Academy in Essen, Germany, the young Morgenstern Trio won prizes at international competitions in Europe and Australia before earning the KLR award that will grant them their first North American tours in 2010-2011.

AMES TOWN & GOWN CELEBRATED 60th SEASON WITH

A SPECIAL GIFT TO CITY



To celebrate our forward-looking spirit, as well as our longevity, Ames Town & Gown chosen to present a special, permanent gift to citizens of Ames. As audiences enter the lobby of the City Auditorium, they are now surrounded by a beautiful and colorful art installation by textile artist Priscilla Sage.  Town & Gown commissioned a six-piece hanging work , entitled Con brio (translated “with spirit!”), to enhance the space, and was joined in this project by the Ames Public Art Commission, which has purchased two wall-mounted works by Sage.
